"EEEEEEK!"
Becky had been unable to contain her scream, though she had done her very best. Today was the day that a group of civilians were going to go into the cornfields and find out whatever it was out their causing all of the damage to the town's population and preventing their escape.
A majority of the members were still convening outside of the cornfields. Becky had gone ahead, but only by a good 15 or so meters into the fields. She had been a bit impatient, and besides, the job she had been given was that of a scout anyway. However, her impatience had caused her to see the most disgusting sight she had ever seen.
Before her laid the body of Natalie Wright, an elementary school teacher who had disappeared about four months ago. The mystery of her whereabouts was now answered. Dead. She was dead. Here was the nasty proof.
"HEEEEELP!" She screamed out louder. What to do?

Blaine had been glad to see things were going through as he thought they should. The town was starting to get a little more courage in dealing with the threat from the corner. Though things seemed to be happening faster then he thought. Not a lot of people were brave enough for this, until they got support from a group. Yet, this is how it should be. No one trying to be all BraveHeart and rush in getting themselves killed.
They were here to stop the killings not gain more. As he waited on the edge of the corn for the others, he heard a scream come from with in. He was a little skeptical, having seen some of the things the children could do. Thinking that this could really be a trap of some kind, but the scream didnt come from that far away.
He pulled out one of his .45s from his armpit holster and cocked the slide back, putting on in the chamber. He creeped through the corn as he made his way silently to the spot. As he reached it, he saw the pink hair of Becky Myers. He shook his head and looked around for signs of anyone or anything else. He looked down and saw the reason she screamed.
Walking over to her he grabbed her arm, turning her to face him. "Keep it down, some people are trying to be silent over here you know."

This was a more suited position for the doctor, especially since she was only a nurse. But still, she would admit that she was curious as to the missing townspeople and their children. It had always amazed her that no one knew what happened to them, and then simply accepted that it was nothing. Though recently, the events seemed to have gotten worse. More and more people wanted answers and it seemed that today was the day they would seek them. When she volunteered, Susan had believed she would be doing something medical related, and it turned out to be so.
Standing in the plains with a few of the other volunteers, the young female looked around calmly for any sign of life or things that were out of the ordinary. Though the peace around them seemed to end with a scream, causing a quick churn to everyone's nerves as they all seemed to go on full alert. Susan found herself acting in turn, running towards the direction of the call to find Mr. Smith and Becky standing beside what appeared to be a dead body.
"What happened? Oh my god is that Natalie?"
Kneeling down beside the body, it was clear that she'd been out here for sometime. The partial deterioration of the flesh showed that it had to be around the time she had went missing, which was months ago. The stench was almost unbearable, but thankfully she was used to dealing with the dead from her time in college.

"Whoever... or whatever did this... they weren't messing around. They're sick and disgusting!"
Becky was grossed out by the fact that whomever this serial killer was could do something so terrible to such a great person. There were puncture wounds all over Natalie's body. It was obvious to Becky that her death had been gruesome, long, and painful. All of those points were true and they could not be disputed.
Becky clinched her fists down at her side. She felt like she wanted to punch something, but whoever had done this was no where around, or at the very least she didn't know who it was. Her mind could easily begin to wonder though. It could be anyone. Even someone in this very group right now.
Becky looked into Blaine's eyes. He had pulled her to face him, and she did so. Her anger was obvious though. She didn't know what to say to him. She didn't know who to be angry at either. It was too much for her like this. She wanted to fight. She wanted to find the source of the problem. But this was too much.
"She's dead!" Becky yelled. Becky would pull her arm away from him. "Some sick freak! Look at what they did to her! Look at it!"

The sheriff scratched behind his ear as he walked down the road towards the meeting place. He wasn't dressed as he normally was, ie kakki shirt and pants with a wide-brimmed hat. That wasn't good for this type of gathering. They were supposedly hunting unnatural. Instead, Thomas wore dark blue track pants, a black tee, his sneakers, and some bandaging on his hands and fingers to prevent dropping anything due to sweat or panic.
Slung on his back was a single strap backpack that crossed his torso and clipped around the other side to prevent excess movement. Inside he had extra ammunition, water, an MRE, flares, extra salt, and a variety of other items. His pistol and a pouch of salt hung on his belt. The salt being a recommendation by the priest.
Thomas checked his watch. It was about time to meet but no one else was here. Then he listened and heard talking in the field. The man slipped a black sweat band over his watch, lest the light give him away. His M14 hung reassuringly over his shoulder.
He plunged into the woods, moving with a trained grace so his aim didn't bounce. It took him a few seconds before he emerged on a small clearing with Becky, Blaine, and Susan already there. They were crowded around a body. It was rather mutilated, but still recognizable. "Are you three alright?"'
Thomas knelt down next to the body and examined it. Natalie Wright, she had been dead for months. The flesh was rather worn and dry and most of the blood had long ago seeped away into the dirt. A number of bugs were busily eating away the remaining flesh. What was interesting was the punctures. They looked like bullet wounds, but the wounds had dried and rotted away so there was no way to know for sure. But considering previous evidence it was safer to say a spike of some kind.
He stood up and wiped his brow. "Did you look for tracks or drag marks yet?"
As they answered Thomas started digging out an arrow with his sneaker that pointed to where the cars were.

Today was the day of reckoning, the day when, united, both civil and clerical authorities decided to strike against the wicked foe who hid itself in the cornfield. This action had enough importance for the city, because from its success or failure morale would either be raised or dropped. There were enough people around though, so they had a good shot. And with God's help, they would be able to drive out the terrible menace, right? Right.
Understanding the who necessity of the situation, Cross gathered every one who dared coming with him here. All armed. And all willing to shoot down the malicious foe. But as he knew, a battle against a demon, or a bunch of demons even, would be a tricky one. Especially on demons' turf.
He looked around, as the group positioned itself on the road next to the cornfield. The sun was burning hot - the priest chose day for a reason - the children were weaker in the daylight. They were nightspawns, sleeping during day and going out at night to claim yet another victim... A victim like that teacher the scouts had just found. A lot of noise, a lot of gasps of terror. But ... he didn't care about the corpse much. He had seen enough in his lifetime to be surprised. Still, he had to show up and say something. Which he did.
- Poor woman... May her spirit find its way to the Lord's side... - he said as he approached and gazed upon the decomposing corpse. An empty vessel, nothing more. Its soul was already gone, but Cross did not know where, he could only hope that it went up, and not down. However, being shocked over a corpse was not what they were here for.
They were here to kill demons. Cross knew they were here, his demon sense was tingling ever since he came here. Powerful demons... strong enough for him to pick them up. He could not pinpoint the location, but the direction was clear enough. Somewhere to the south from where they were right now. And judging by the woman's wounds, they used some sort of ranged weaponry too...
- Enough looking at the dead body though. Get out of the corn, there are things to be done. - he said as he poured some holy water upon the corpse. Just in case. And there were indeed much things to be done.
Cross was not going to simply lead the people into the corn head-on. That would have been a rash and stupid move - they'd surely be ambushed, and a lot of people would die. This corn was hiding them and their base from sight, which made things difficult. Cross had something in mind to fix that though.
- The menace hides in there. But we won't find it in the corn. Tis his domain, we would be ambushed. Whatever is in there has killed enough people already, so listen up! We'll set the field on fire first. Throw some incendiaries in the middle of the field, and see what happens. See anything move - shoot. - Cross was not able to say everything he wanted to say, not all had seen demons, yet. But decaying proof of their existence was lying in front of them. Just like that body they found back at the warehouse before.... torn apart by inhuman strength.

Blaine brought his arm back to his side once Becky yanked free from him. He hoped that she wasnt along with the group he was with. Cross had asked him to come along, so he didnt really know who all would be on this excursion. With all her yelling and screaming, it would alert who ever was out in the corn of their presence. He just simple shook his head and turned his back to her walking a few feet away.
It seemed the Sheriff and the nurse were out here to tonight. No doubt along with Cross, as he also came on the scene. He turned his attention to Cross now as he spoke. He liked the idea and hoped it would work. Though he was speaking to all of them which me that Becky was along with them. He would tsk, and re-holster his gun, as he crossed his arms.

Standing up as the sheriff began to conduct his own observations, Susan looked towards Becky and sighed as she could see she was upset. In truth, she was as well. But the difference was that she had managed to have better control over her emotions. She had known Natalie. The woman was an excellent teacher who loved children and her job. Whoever was doing this needed to be stopped.
Yet before she could say anything, the priest appeared over them as he stated his suggestions. Though the idea of burning the fields down did seem a tad extreme.
" Wait....You actually want to burn down the corn fields? Isn't that alittle....extreme? I mean, we have no idea what we're looking for and starting a fire isn't exactly a good place to start is it?"

Becky was still angry and disgruntled by what had happened. She held her fists clenched and bit her tongue. She'd say nothing more on the issue, but she couldn't believe that no one else here seemed to be nearly as disturbed as she was by the dead boy in front of them. Whatever or whoever did this was certainly going to pay. Becky would make sure of it. She wouldn't allow people in town to keep going missing and dying. It was terrible. They couldn't relax in their own homes.
In any case, it seemed that everyone was retreating from the cornfields for now. As much as Becky wanted to continue moving forward, she would leave to join the other 20 or so civilians outside of the cornfield and listen to what Pater Dominguez had to say. Why a priest was leading this organization she didn't know, but she'd follow him. It seemed it'd make more sense for the sheriff to lead though.
Everyone would gather and listen to Pater Dominguez. Becky would stay next to Susan. Though Susan seemed to have something against the setting the cornfield on fire, as did Becky.
"The Cornfields are also our primary source of food while we're stuck here! Burning them down would be incredibly drastic," Becky argued, and it was true. While they couldn't even leave town and were stuck in the town, they would need the corn fields. Corn meal, corn itself, popcorn, and all kinds of other goods could be made. Without the cornfields, they possibly wouldn't even have the resources needed to maintain themselves.

Thomas stopped digging the arrow in the ground when Dominguez showed up. He berated them briefly before ordering them back out of the cornfield. A good idea all in all. The place just screamed ambush. He could feel the goosebumps forming already. Thomas followed the others, making sure to keep a watchful eye out.
When they emerged safely, Thomas relaxed a bit and listened to the priest's plan. Granted, it wasn't stupid and made perfect sense from a military standpoint, but he seemed to have skipped over the consequences of such a scheme. The others were quick to point out a few and Thomas joined in.
"I agree. We don't have enough people to cover the entire field if someone does try to escape. And plus we couldn't control the fire even if we wanted to. What if there are survivors in the fields? What if the fire spreads? The town would be in danger and we'd be stuck fighting an inferno with no help. Plus, think of the property damages." The last part was his professional side chiming in. "Plus shooting at shadowy figures during a fire is a bad idea."
He rubbed his chin a bit, thinking on what to do. Then an idea struck him. "We should get some higher ground and scout out a path. With a compass and map we wouldn't get lost. We should climb the water tower and see what we can find."

Cross fixed his glasses back on his nose and massaged his temple a bit as he heard the myriad of complaints and protests about his plan. They did not understand what they were up against. He did. And if they did, all the matters of property, fire control and other matters would prove irrelevant. Sadly, he couldn't tell them that this was not just one deranged psycho hiding out there, his demon sense was screaming "Horde!". This is why he had to insist. Sending a squad into the corn would be sending them to death. Cross had a few arguments up his sleeve.
- The only way out of the city is this narrow road through the cornfield. And from what I was told nobody managed to leave the city - all were ambushed and killed by whatever lurks out there. if we burn the cornfield, and this place becomes a flat opened plain, they would not be able to ambush anybody, and we will be able to evacuate people and tell the rest of the world what's going on here. - he explained his point of view.
It was a tactic known even in ancient wars. When a road through the forest is frequently ambushed - you cut down the forest. When corn... You burn the corn. But his opinion was just what it was - his opinion. If the majority decides to send a scouting party into the corn ... he'd go with them. He knew that he'd be their only defense, and hope that someone gets out alive...

Blaine was getting irritated by this group. They were all having conflicting views on the situation at hand. They didnt understand that it was possible to control a fire. They just had to be safe about it, and dont do anything stupid. He shook his head looking away from the talking group. He was on Cross' side with all of this, and that they needed to get access to the outside world once again.
His head still turned away from the group as he thought of the things to say to everyone to back up Cross. "What yall dont understand is, with the few numbers we have, we can control a fire and make sure it doesnt get out of hand. We can just hook up the water tower to a few hoses and control were the burn goes. If there are survivors out there, then they are most likely lost to what ever is out there anyways, pretty sure they would want to die by us then by them. Once we are able to get access back to the outside world, we can get food from them for support. We can regrow the corn later, or else we wont even be around to enjoy it. As for who we shoot at, just dont be stupid. Look upon who your aiming at and make your decision from there. If not then you will either be right or be dead. Were just making this situation more complicated then it has to be. I thought we were here to fight off the threat, not argue amongst each other. Just pick your poison and lets move on."

The scream, the rushing of others, it all caught his attention. He was the newest to arrive, yet still caught all of their words. He'd been silent for so long, but he'd speak up, cutting them all off. "All I know is, if any of you come at my shop with the idea of stealing ANYTHING, even a single shell, Imma' fuckin' use you as live target practice."
Shrugging his shoulders he glanced at the girls corpse, cringing slightly, the fuck happened to her? "Burn the field? Would make sense if you wanted to risk taking out our food source along with what ever may be out there. Go shoot at the shadows, end up shootin' each other cause y'all are idiots. Won't catch me running around in the shadows with some dumb hicks shootin' around at anything that moves." Glancing at the coprse once more he'd begin to walk closer to it, examining it to try and see what was the cause of death. The truth of the matter was that there were just too many unknowns to go ahead and do something so rash as to burn down the entire cornfield. Mr. Priest may have thought it was a good idea, but if they tried it and it didn't work, they'd be screwed over. Burning the fields was a one shot deal, and if there was even the semblance of a chance that it wouldn't work, it wasn't a favorable decision from the perspective of logic.
"The corn fields go out for miles upon miles, almost endlessly from this town," Becky would say once again. This was going to lead her to another point, but for the most part everything had been said. She would only be reiterating what she had said earlier. There was simply no safe way to do this when they were fighting an unknown enemy.
"Anyway. We're not getting anywhere," Becky said, changing the subject to a certain extent. "All of this bickering is getting us no where. People are dying. Tonight, lets just try to put a face to our enemy so that we can at least know what we'd be burning."
Becky crossed her arms stubbornly. She was a bit upset with the way things were going on right now. The priest wasn't making any sense. This was all just ridiculous to her. She turned around and began walking towards the cornfields once again.
"I'm going to go figure out what we're dealing with. Who's coming with me?"

This was all useless squabble. There was no real hierarchy and the priest had wasted the respect of the group on a rash suggestion. Thomas had seen this happen numerous times on the battlefield when young lieutenants would push their luck too far.
Surprisingly enough, it was Becky who stepped forward and pushed them on. Thomas had to give a little smile at the spunk. "I agree. We're wasting time arguing about unknowns. And besides..."
He set his rifle down and let down his backpack. He reached in and pulled out a few canisters. They were cylindrical with an tab made from can tops. Don't let that fool you. There was years of makeshift explosive knowledge poured into making them. "...we've got these, smoke grenades. I whipped these up easy. If something happens we can escape under the cover of the smoke. Just don't get lost."
He packed the grenades away and clipped one to his belt for easy access. The things might be a little iffy, but they were better than nothing. The sheriff followed Becky and shifted his rifle into place. "I'll take the lead. I've got the most experience in hand to hand combat."
